Pre-Season Weekend

This year our plan is to devote more time during "orientation" to staff training and less time to the actual camp set up. Therefore, our head counselors and several other staff members have generously volunteered their services for a weekend this spring to take care of the lion- share of physical preparations. This will entail playing fields, the courts, the campfire, and the game areas.

The invitation is also extended to our alumni who would enjoy a weekend at camp and an opportunity to see the "other side" of the camp operation. The camp will house and feed all participants. Cabin inspection will be suspended for this occasion.

  • Dates: Saturday and Sunday 6/9 & 6/10
  • Arrival Friday 6/8 is OK
Please RSVP to gaconfer@aol.com if you would like to attend.

Dear Friends:

As you all know, there is a great deal of work involved in setting up camp and a narrow window of opportunity in which to accomplish it all.

Post-Season Family Camping
alumni

In lieu of a full scale reunion, Forest Lake will host a week of family camping this year following the regular camp season.

The plan is to open the camp facilities to our alumni and their families to relax, recreate, and enjoy the surroundings. There will be no scheduled program. Rather, the facilities (waterfront, courts, fields, trails) will be available for guests to use at their convenience.

The dining hall will be open for a continental breakfast each morning. Each Saturday evening the camp will host a barbcue. All other meals will be the responsibility of the guests (outside of camp).

We hope that this format will allow families the flexibility to organize "mini-reunions" and for FLC to be the base of operation for enjoying the resources of both the camp and the Adirondack region.

Family camping dates are Friday, August 24 through Monday, September 3. Guests are welcome to stay for the entire time or any combination of days. Fees and charges will be based on a per diem basis. The next alumni newsletter in June will outline the fee schedule and will provide reservation details. So, go to your phones, computers, and writing pads to contact your old campmates and organize your mini reunion.

FLC Today and Yesterday

What are today's favorite camp activities?

  • The waterfront is still the centerpiece of the program and, since instructional swim is no longer mandatory, campers enjoy the swimming component more. Also, at the waterfront, the addition of a fleet of kayaks has added another activity that has become popular.
  • The climbing tower is a recent addition to the program and is very popular with both boys and girls.
  • The most often cited favorite activity remains the Sunday evening campfire.

Were any FLC Alums olympic athletes?

  • Bob Maguire (counselor from 50's) was a member of the US Olympic Rifle Team.
  • Tom Allen (waterfront director from 40's-50's) was a member of the US Olympic Track & Field Team.

Who among the current staff have spanned the most years at camp?

  • Russ Combs (son of Clif Combs) has been at FLC in the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's.
  • Chris Stamm has had the same tenure 70's-00's.
  • John Bockelmann began in the early 80's and has returned every year but one.
  • John and Kelly Cullen cover the 60's, 70's, 90's, and 00's.

What names are listed in the FLC pantheon of legendary camp dogs? The following list is not necessarily in order of importance:

Can you match any of the dogs to their owners? (answers at end of newsletter.)

What positive outcome of the FLC experience is the most often mentioned?

  • In a recent survey of our 2006 families the respondents listed "independence", "new interests", but, by far, "friendships" carried the day.
