Dear Friends:
|
|
First Winter Snowfall
|
|
An early winter storm passed
through on Monday, December 3rd
and left behind a 6" blanket of
new snow on Forest Lake Camp.
Since the lake recently froze,
the new snow covers that as
well.
The year round residents at
camp, The Combs and The Confers,
hope this is the first of many
such snowfalls that will not
only provide recreational
opportunities but also protect
the grounds, buildings, and
foundations from the frigid
temperatures ahead.
When scanning the current
landscape, it is difficult to
picture campers bolting to the
WF to cool off, guzzling
gatorade and ice water, or doing
all camp activities in shorts
and t-shirts.
However, come April, the
process reverses and FLC will be
ready to welcome all the 2008
campers by summer.

New Site Map Developed
|
|
The winter office staff has
undertaken the project of
drafting a new site map of the
Forest Lake campus. The plan is
to make hardcopies for
distribution but also to post
the map on the website. Be sure
to visit the FLC website on
occasion for announcements and
new features. |

Alumni Sightings
|
|
It was a cold, late November
afternoon when two giant men
emerged from a strange car on
the grounds of Forest Lake Camp.
Even Yogi (165 lb. Newf) was
hesitant to approach these
intimidating figures.
As it turned out, Yogi's
fears were unfounded. The two
giants were none other than
Scott Butterfield and Jeff Cribb
both standout staff members from
the 90's.
Jeff was visiting from
England where he works in law
enforcement (thank goodness).
Veterans will recall that Jeff
was an avid kayaker, an interest
he has maintained along with
cycling. Scott provided the
chauffeuring duties but his true
vocation is a high school
science teacher. Veterans will
remember Scott for his directing
the camp science program and for
his leading canoe trips.

Did U Know?
|
- The original campfire
site was located at the top
of the boys dining hall
walkway.
- A time capsule (sealed
steamer trunk) was buried by
a group of campers and staff
in the 1940's somewhere on
the boys campus. It has yet
to be unearthed.
- The " ol girls camp"
located on the "other side"
of the camp property was
actually a coed camp. It was
called Spruce Mountain Camp.
- The stretch of road from
the riding area past the
farmhouse, past the lodge,
past the rifle range was
part of the original road
from Warrensburg to
Chestertown and was traveled
by stagecoaches.
- The massive amount of
stone used to build the wall
around the lodge was
gathered by hand and hauled
on a "stoneboat" by Phil
Confer and Rich Vanwagoner.
The masonry work was done by
Larry Raymond.
- 150 rainbow trout were
released into Forest Lake on
November 25,2007.
