We're on the hunt to find more great FLC Alumni!

As an organization one of our hopes is that the FLC experience remains a special memory throughout one's life, not just during their childhood summers days.

That is why, last month we decided to contract with a company called AlumniFinder. AlumniFinder specializes in finding alumni for institutions such as camps and schools.

Through much effort we scoured a list of over 2,000 alumni whom we have fallen out of contact with, and gave that list to AlumniFInder. As a result, we now have many addresses and emails for those alumni who once attended camp.

So get ready to reconnect with that camper who you have been trying to locate for over 20 years - you know that camper who you shared a bunk with but just can't seem to remember his or her name. Who knows, they just might show up in our alumni directory! So be on the lookout and update your alumni info.

Our holiday mailing should be in your hands now and we owe a huge thanks and congratulations to Emily Fagan as the winner of our Holiday Card competition. Emily's card design shows FLC in all its winter wonder!

We hope you enjoy your card and DVD and if, like Emily, you have anything you'd like to share with us we'd love to see it.

You can post on our facebook or email us at info@forestlakecamp.com

FLC has too many Friends!

where we will be updating you on all things camp.

Please pass along our page to anyone you know who might be interested in Forest Lake and ask them to LIKE us!

We will continue to update our page with content so be sure to check back regularly and say hello whenever you get a chance!

Property Update

Seasons Greetings campers! Winter is here at FLC, and that means driving rains, blistering winds, blinding snow storms and... snipes, oh my! But it takes more than that to slow progress here at camp, [that's right I have an umbrella, a windbreaker, and a shovel for the snow... and the snipes!] and the late fall and early winter season has seen much change.

Summer bid us a fond farewell in the form of a tropical storm, leaving the campus a tangled mess of fallen limbs and downed trees, and the clean-up is finally coming to a much appreciated end. Limbs were cleared from the usual places: the fields, foot trails, athletic areas; and from the not so usual places, namely, Heather's car and the director's cabin roof!

But all that is a thing of the past. Heather has a new car and the director's cabin has a shiny new metal roof. Likewise, the leaky roof on Boys 10 has been torn off and reshingled and is now ready for the two feet of snow which will soon be moving in for the duration of winter.

Boys Cabin New is in the process of a remodel, adding bunks and lockers to the main living area while converting the lower room into a bathroom.

The entrance road to the lodge has also been the victim of a remodel, as a pond has been excavated for your viewing pleasure!

All this and much more is coming next summer as Boys 7 and 10 will also be getting new bathrooms added on. Hold on, now 7 and 10 are getting bathrooms? LUXURY! Why, back when I was a camper none of the cabins had bathrooms! We had to share the latrine... with the Jabberwalky!

That's all for now, enjoy the holiday season and keep an eye out for that pesky batman... I know I will!

Greetings FLC Families,

We want to wish everyone a very happy New Year!

For those who live in the northeast it has been an odd fall, with a tropical storm and very mild weather. However, winter is now here and summer is just around the corner!

December has been another very productive month for FLC. It has been a pleasure catching up with many veteran families, as well as connecting with many new FLC families too! We continue to focus on reaching out to our alumni both new and old. Also much time has been spent this month speaking with our staff and discussing employment for next summer - we are thrilled to announce that most of our 2011 staff will be back again this summer!

We are very much looking forward to what the New Year has in store for FLC and are excited to kick off the New Year and connect with many of you at our Open Houses this winter!

This month's newsletter is jam packed with great news, fantastic recollections and reminders, so be sure to read each and every article.

Camp Counselor,

the Best Job?

Denzel Washington Thinks So!

Denzel Washington worked from a young age, taking on small jobs for money even in grade school.  When he was in college at Fordham University, he worked as a camp counselor, where he was first bitten by the performing bug after performing in the camp variety show.

Many of us can't imagine a summer without camp and as we get older it turns out that there are many benefits to continuing our return to camp.

In studies of the value of being a camp counselor there have been many great findings

Camp counselors describe accomplishments in the areas of leadership, public speaking, role modeling, teaching, helping campers have a positive experience, and making a connection with their campers.

For college age staff some results were surprising and enlightening: 63 percent reported an increased desire to stay in school; 65 percent reported job or career opportunities opened up for them; and 74 percent reported they were more prepared for college.

Agreeing with Denzel and looking to return to Forest Lake this summer as counselors are; Aaron, Ria, Andrew, Ann, Katie, Eleanor, Emma, Hannah, Helen, Jamie, John, Josh, Lilje, Luke, Marc, Becky, Susie and more....

So, are you ready for another summer at camp?  Or do you know someone you think would benefit from the summer experience and who would be a great asset to Forest Lake?

A reminder that our new online application is now live.  Please

Any questions. please let us know at

We look forward to hearing from you!

Help us spread the word
about our FLC Events!
Don't miss out on the FUN! Attend an FLC event this winter and connect with our FLC community. Current FLC families, prospects, alumni and staff are all welcome to attend!

Here's how you can help:
  • Attend one of our events this winter and bring a family
  • Forward our FLC Event details to a family or friend
  • Post our Events Flyer up in your local coffee shop (it works!)
  • Post our Events schedule (below) in your children's school newsletters (we're happy to offer a blurb for this too)
Thank you in advance for helping us spread the word! We are looking forward to gathering in the New Year and sharing together what makes FLC such a special place! If you have thoughts on how you can help, please email us at info@forestlakecamp.com

What  the Batra family thought about
Family Camp
Batra Family with their dog Leigh

We spent a wonderful week at FLC's Family Camp in the Adirondacks this summer. Situated on 800 acres, and on a beautiful lake, who could ask for more.  What's more, our entire family went, including our dog!

We all enjoyed trying new activities as a family, activities that you wouldn't normally experience, fencing, riflery, and archery.  Our kids also got to enjoy activities on their own, with new friends.  We all had the opportunity to have fun, be together and have some alone time - perfect for recharging the batteries.

We enjoyed playing group games with the counselors, and getting to know them. Softball, ultimate frisbee and Team Olympics were a huge hit - Go Team Leigh!  We learned what "Family Board Games" meant, and while initially reluctant to partake, we got into the spirit of it with apple bobbing and eating the cherry pie with no hands! We especially enjoyed our evening camp fires, the skits and jokes and group time together.

We loved our time at FLC, the counselors and other families made it an incredible experience.

-Sandra Batra

"What do you like about FLC?"

An interview with Meghan Cullen

1. What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Meghan Cullen and I am from Long Valley, New Jersey.

2. How long you have been coming to FLC?

This summer will be my 11th summer at FLC. I've practically grown up there. FLC has been my home for longer than I can remember.

3 How has your fall gone?

I have had an amazing year so far. High school is pretty challenging, but also very rewarding. While I was sad to leave FLC, I started soccer try-outs the day after I got back. My JV soccer team went undefeated, 12-0, in our first year with our new coach. That was probably the best part of my fall. Soccer ended, and while I was pretty sad, basketball was soon underway. I got moved up from my freshman to JV basketball team, and our team is currently 2-1, and we're improving every day.

4. Why do you keep coming back to FLC?

FLC is a part of who I am. It Is my home.

5. What are you looking forward to the most about summer 2012?

Everything! I think I'm most looking forward to seeing all the people. I can't wait to see my American friends, along with all my foreign friends. One of the best parts of camp is meeting all the different types of people.

6. What is your best memory from all the years you have spent at FLC?

Oh boy......the best memory of FLC I have is a collection of memories of all the days I've spent in the cabin with my friends. While it's easy to get caught up in everything that is FLC, I remember my fondest memories as those spent just hanging out in the cabin with my best friends.

7. What is your camp color?

WHITE....all the way. (the color, I believe, that has WON the past three years.)

8. Which cabin is your favorite?

Cabin 6 was my favorite junior cabin, but I think my overall favorite cabin has to be Cabin 1.

9. Interesting Fact about yourself?

When playing any sport...I spend more time on the ground than on my feet. Ask anyone. (Junior Girl's Soccer)

10. What would you say to a camper who is thinking about coming to FLC?

Come to FLC. It is the only place I would ever consider spending my summer. You will try new activities that you never dreamed of before, you will understand why I come back every summer, and you'll make friendships that will last a lifetime. I know I have.

As always, we hope you've enjoyed reading this edition of our newsletter. We're always delighted to hear from you and any news you'd like to share with us. You can reach us at info@forestlakecamp.com
